Multi-electrode recordings were employed by Ghazanfar and Nicolelis (see p. 355) to quantify the spatial and temporal attributes of sensory responses generated by populations of single neurons located in layer V of the rat primary somatosensory cortex. This cartoon illustrates the finding that a single whisker stimulus activates an area of layer V that is, on average, 5.6 times larger than a single barrel column.
