Cover Figure

Cover Picture: Cortical representation of a single whisker stimulus by populations of neurons located in layer V of the rat barrel cortex. Multi-electrode recordings were employed by Ghazanfar and Nicolelis (see p. 355) to quantify the spatial and temporal attributes of sensory responses generated by populations of single neurons located in layer V of the rat primary somatosensory cortex. This cartoon illustrates the finding that a single whisker stimulus activates an area of layer V that is, on average, 5.6 times larger than a single barrel column. The barrel field is represented by a cytochrome oxidase stained section through layer IV. See Ghazanfar and Nicolelis, pp. 348-361.
