Cover Picture : In this issue, McKellar & Shatz describe a program of gene expression that is detected by microarray studies of synapse formation in cultures of cortical subplate neurons. These cultures of a purified glutamatergic cell population represent a system where synaptogenesis can be triggered rapidly and in a synchronized fashion, allowing the first investigation of molecular events accompanying synapse formation in a purified cortical cell type.
