Cover Picture: The density of neurons in primary visual cortex (V1) projecting to the thin cytochrome oxidase stripes in the second visual area (V2) varies by cortical layer. The top circle represents the cells in layer 2/3 of V1, color-coded according to the cytochrome oxidase density where they were located (blue = patch, white = interpatch). In deeper layers of the same field (4A, left; 4B, right), fewer cells are found in the patches, but they are aligned with the patch cells in layer 2/3. The cells are superimposed on photographs of the sections where the cells resided. Field of view is about 4 mm.
