About the Cover

Cover Figure

Selective activation of color-selective 'islands' aligned in a string within cortical visual area V2 (yellow-red). Other regions of V2 responded equally (gray) or slightly more (blue-cyan) to luminance-based visual stimuli. The activation map is based on statistical analysis of a double-label deoxyglucose map, in a surface parallel view of flattened cortical tissue. Based on cytochrome oxidase stains from the same tissue, the color-selective regions are located within the 'thin dark' V2 stripes (cyan band); the 'thick dark' stripes are indicated by purple bands.
