Cover Picture: Cross-modal (auditory/visual) integration in the deep laminae of the superior colliculus (SC) is shown in schematic form with a model neuron and inputs from the retina and cochlea. The background is a high-magnification capture from the deep layers of the SC showing protein (red) and mRNA (green) staining of immediate-early gene zif268 in response to 2 h of auditory stimulation followed by 30 min of visual stimulation. The protein-positive neurons are acoustically driven only, whereas the mRNA-neurons are visually driven. Some neurons are double-labeled (yellow), revealing the cross-modal integration properties of SC deep laminae neurons. See Zangenehpour and Chaudhuri, pp. 924-935.
