About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover Picture: Multilevel approach to explore the structure and function of the orbitofrontal cortex. On the background is a microscopic image from hippocampal field CA1 showing fluorescent pyramidal neurons; they were labelled from injections of fast blue and diamidino yellow placed in the orbitofrontal cortex of a macaque monkey (Cavada et al., pp. 220-242). The inset at the left shows a medial area of human orbitofrontal cortex where a four-choice guessing task elicited more activity than a two-choice guessing task (Elliot et al., pp. 308-317). The right inset displays the coding of relative reward preference by an orbitofrontal neuron: activity increased during the expectation period preceding the relatively more preferred food reward (raisin versus apple). Each reward was predicted by a specific instruction picture, which is shown above the histograms (modified from Tremblay and Schultz, reprinted by permission from Nature 398:704-708, copyright 1999).
